The idea of religion prospering in a communist country defies credibility, but, according to Bishop Frank T. Griswold III, the former head of the Episcopal Church in the United States, that’s exactly what’s happening in Cuba.
Griswold, who from 1998 to 2006 was the 25th presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, has made three trips to the island nation in the past few years and finds that “there’s no overt hostility to religion.”
“Recently,” he reported, “particularly after the recent hurricanes, the [Cuban] government is realizing that the social services that many of the churches provide [and] rural projects of sustainable agriculture, that all these are positives.”
Griswold? Griswold? Name’s familiar, but I just can’t place it. Did he ever have anything important to say that I should remember?
#1. Diblertnomore,
Boy are you out of the loop! Doesn’t the name Clark Griswold ring a bell? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qc_RYm0ylA.
“There is no persecution of any kind,†Griswold said.
Really. So why do people risk their lives (and often lose them) to cross to Florida? Why don’t they just apply to become US citizens and calmly wait out the process? Who are these ‘refugees’ in Florida, anyway? Are they just a bunch of whiners and criminals?
This guy was in tears because his wife couldn’t get the drug.
Why don’t they mke their own drugs? Does the USA prevent countries like Cuba from making their own? Aren’t their economic systems just as capable of producing drugs as ours?
“there’s no overt hostility to religion.â€
‘Overt’ – meaning what?
lively debate. That’s a skill, he said, that has to be learned in Cuba.
Why? Is lively debate discouraged? If so, how? If it were, would that be ‘persecution?’
He said that while local church leaders don’t challenge the government
Why not? You said there was no ‘persecution’ of any kind; could you give examples of what ‘persecution’ would be?
“As John Paul got to the bottom step, he did trip. Fidel Castro rushed forward and caught him in his arms. That’s a photograph that’s never been seen, at least not in the United States.â€
Why not? Other than Castro’s testimony of it, is there evidence that this event actually happened?
