RNS: National Day of Prayer events overshadowed by politics

Every year between 2001 and 2008, former President Bush’s calendar was cleared on the first Thursday in May to mark the National Day of Prayer in the White House East Room with prominent evangelicals.

Now the Obama White House is facing questions of inside-the-Beltway etiquette: Should Obama maintain the open door to conservative critics like James and Shirley Dobson, and if so, should they accept?

Or, will the White House have an official observance at all?

Given the President’s hostility towards outward Christian [removed]Rick Warren being an exception) — vetting prayers to eliminate references to Jesus; “requesting” a platform at a Christian college to cover up a permanent reference to Jesus; etc., I’d rather see him cancel it rather than have a watered down version of the event.]

Now, if he agrees to have evangelicals invited with no preexisting conditions, that would be different.

    That should have read

    “hostility towards outward Christian expression.”

I don’t know why the word was removed, but perhaps I misspelled it.

I would think EUCSA, UCC and the like would be all over an Obama sponsored prayer day…..

  4. Dave B says:

3 Yes Chris but who would they pray too and what prayers to use?…

I would rather see is cancelled, but then, I would have preferred that it never would have been started. “Prayers” – – in whatever public form – – that are initiated and promoted by governments and / or governmental organizations, in whatever locale or nation they originate – – are primarily for ‘show’ and have little or nothing to do with penitance, real petition, or honest promise to align that locale or country with the Will of the Almighty.
Let’s just quit trying to fool God and stop these kinds of shows, altogether. After all, if we had been willing to listen to the Will of God in the first place, Obama would likely not be president now.
