When I was a child, I used to go with my uncles, who were university students at the time, to the Great Library in Alexandria. It was always a treat for me, the sight of all those scrolls and the possibilities seemed endless . I remember one fellow one of the many scroll-fetchers the library had always growsed about how many requests that a visit by my family would entail. But there was something beautiful and dramatic about unrolling the words and seeing the handscribed letters appear in front of you. This modern way seems a miracle that so many words appear out of the ether BUT every darn machine does something just enough differently and frustating enough to make me long for, once in awhile, the tangible immediacy of the unrolling vellum.
Very good – once I had learned to toggle the reading pane to ‘full screen’ at top right. I don’t know where you find the time Dr Harmon, but am glad you do.
Kendall, it is great to see this online. I’ve never been a subscriber to the print version – never even knew about it, I’m afraid until I started reading your blog in 2003….

I’ve been a reader and supporter of TAD since 1987, when I attended Church of the Ascension in Chicago, where I think someone had sponsored a subscription for every member of the parish. I will probably end up forgoing the paper version in favor of exclusively reading new issues online, as I already do with Episcopal Life. I welcome the convenience of an online version, as well as the likely beneficial environment effect.
