Can anyone make sense of me of that garbled reference to St Augustine’s throne in Canterbury? Who is it who is said to be coming to take over the throne? Presumably an eschatological reference to the Lamb, but, if so, it is a novel interpretation of the book of Revelation. Surely this does not stem from the Bishop of South Carolina? In fact, much of the article gives me the impression of having been written by someone suffering from a blinding migraine.
Sorry. Opening sentence should read: can anyone make sense of that garbled reference etc. I have garbled the reference to the garbled reference. Hoisted with my own petard.
Weird. Sounds like they’ve confused some mangled version of William Blake’s poem Milton (“And did those feet in ancient time etc) with what Bishop Lawrence actually said.
Just a guess, but I’m guessing Bishop Lawrence, if quoted right, was perhaps speaking of one he believes to be next in line to the chair of Canterbury. Anyone know which of the English bishops attended GAFCON, and who among them would be considered a good contender for the See of Canterbury?
I don’t know if the retiring Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, attended, but he would certainly be MY choice as successor to the Throne of St Augustine.
