Elizabeth and I dropped our son Nathaniel off at Boston University yesterday to begin his freshman year. Where does the time go–KSH?

    Interesting to have in the morning readings today in the daily lectionary the following from 1 Kings:

    2:1
    When David’s time to die drew near, he charged Solomon his son, saying,

    2:2
    “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man,

    2:3
    and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn;

    2:4
    that the LORD may establish his word which he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a man on the throne of Israel.’

    I bet you know what I was thinking and praying about.

    Oooo, I can remember my quivering lip and the feeling in my stomach as we parted. In fact, they are all in their 40’s now and it still happens at just that same moment of departing. God bless you and keep Nathaniel in His power.

    I was 16, marching in the band, cheering on the team, dancing all the time……woke up and have a 55 year old son, two wonderful adult grandchildren, and a year old great granddaughter…would I turn the clock back…..no, and again I say no…..but it sure did go fast….especially after I became the senior generation…….sigh

    KH, my wife and I cried off and on all the way home (4 hour drive). Then the next day we discovered coffee at sunrise and glasses of wine at sunset, with no where to be and no one to interrupt us. (Then she came home for the summer.)

    Just got back to Pittsburgh after dropping our son Tim off in New York for the same purpose–at the King’s College, a Christian school in Manhattan. Hearts filled with hope, pride, anxiety, love and half a dozen other emotions I can’t even name, but convinced God has a purpose in it and that we are immensely privileged to be part of it. God bless you Kendall, and Nathaniel and Tim and Sam and Rachel and and and

    For a curative, look at the cost. My son went to Colby. It was then $44,000/year. It is now $50,000 I’m told. If so, the the pleasure of just going to Colby for four years is now $200,000. And then there are the other expenses. Hum. Is BU worth it? I know Boston and BU well.
    A pricey town for pricey tastes. Is the education thing REALLY worth this exhorbitant cost – I almost said rip-off costs. Well, tell him to join Rotc (if BU still has ROTC)and let the Army pay the bill. Larry

    Kendall –

    I’m just back from a trip to Chile. On the flight home I sat near some LDS missionaries (twice my age). We talked about kids, my three and their eight, pkus their 22 grandkids. The one time they got wistful (some context – they’d been away from the US for a year and a half) was on exactly this topic: how fast it goes.
