Jonathan Petre: Rowan Williams confronts the Pope over 'poaching' of clergy

The Archbishop of Canterbury has expressed his concerns to the Pope about the way the Vatican announced a scheme to welcome disaffected Anglicans into the Roman Catholic Church.

In the private meeting at the Vatican with Benedict XVI, Dr Rowan Williams made clear he had been put in an ‘awkward position’ because he had been given so little warning about the proposals to entice Anglicans to Rome by letting them keep many of their traditions.

But he insisted that the tone of the meeting had been ‘very friendly’, and relations between the two Churches were still strong. The Vatican also described the meeting as ‘cordial’.

  1. The young fogey says:

He just sounds pathetic. Rome didn’t poach; the English Anglo-Catholics approached Rome.

Hmph. The esteemed elves would probably edit my comments if I suggested that it is distressing to everyone (including Rome, no doubt) that RW is constantly appearing as a pathetic weakling on the public stage, but it is so very sad that Tony Blair thought him the best that the Anglican Communion could have for a leader.

  3. dwstroudmd+ says:

2, didn’t Blair switch to Rome and start panhandling for the Anglican Agenda per ECUSA/TEC? Perhaps this IS a nefarious plot altogether. Probably hatched in the secret volcanic lair of an organization that shall remain unnamed?

  4. COLUMCIL says:

You know, the Pope would have accepted Rowan as well. He really is being inclusive. Only, he does demand some kind of clear belief.
