Rob Who?

Rob Bell is the founding pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church. He has some very stimulating video resources available through his Nooma series. You may want to consider checking them out (especially those of you involved in Adult education). We did the one on discipleship at the parish in which I serve on Sunday and had a ball–KSH.

We used the Nooma videos for a young adult group. They are easy to watch, brief and can inspire meaningful discussion. The group members liked them.

    Good feedback, Craig, thanks.

I found his book, Velvet Elvis, to be a good summer read. Quick and light, but the book has upset Evangelicals as being somewhat reappraising and Emergent in it’s theology. Bell is one to watch.

I saw a couple of Bell videos over the summer (at Church of the Cross, Bluffton, SC). Very well done – he is able to use a video sequence interspersed with his “sermon” and they complement one another….

Rob Bell’s videos, shown on a large screen, are visually interesting as well as full of sensitive contemporary thought and feeling about the meaning of Christianity and are therefore extremely effective in the place of sermons with long-time churchgoers as well as young people. I especially recommend his “Lump” and “Rhythm” videos as the ones to use first with a congregation. I have seen bring to tears of renewed faith the most skeptical traditionalists who previously believed that sermon time should be reserved exclusively for scholarly rhetoric.
