The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Los Angeles reported Feb. 24 that within the last 50 days it has received 51 of the majority of 56 consents needed to the Dec. 5 election of the Rev. Canon Mary Glasspool as a bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Los Angeles.
Please note that this is ONLY the vote of the Standing Committees, not the vote of Bishops with jurisdiction. As I have said in numerous settings the first is a foregone conclusion, the only interesting thing is the second vote where it will be more interesting–KSH.
Thanks for the hopeful note Dr. Harmon, but why kid ourselves regarding the ultimate outcome? It really won’t be more interesting, just more disheartening. Doesn’t take a betting man….
What will be interesting is the reaction of Archbishop of Canterbury to the consent and “consecration”.
#1… I have found the events of the last 7 years very disheartening too. But I must admit, at this point, I’d find a NO vote to Mary Glasspool at this point far more disheartening than a Yes. What we need now more than anything, I have come to believe, is openness and honesty and transparency. A “no” vote at this point would be a lie (just as the resolutions passed at GC 2006 were a lie). I can respect a NO vote from a bishop only if he plans to strongly adhere to all aspects of the Windsor report and not try to covertly move his diocese toward more SSUs. If a bishop feels like he can support Windsor for the next 40 years (and not just a “season”) then NO is fine — otherwise please stop deceiving the rest of the AC and clearly state your intentions.
I feel like the ABC is wrong to encourage people to vote NO. Rather he should be encouraging honesty and an end to lying.
A no vote wouldn’t mean a whole lot. LA will nominate another gay or lesbian candidate. You have Thompson in Louisiana and Waldo in Upper S. Carolina just itching to get the reins of those dioceses so they can bring the “new thangs” to those places. We haven’t hit bottom yet. Only after hitting bottom, admitting you have a problem, and then working out your problems can you head up. TEC has a long way (and still a lot of money) to go.
What is the Global South going to do about it? But even more importantly what is God going to do with that group of blasphemers?
Come Lord and claim your people as your own.

#2, the Archbishop of Canterbury hath no jurisdiction in this realm of the United States.
from #6 – This is true BUT. [blockquote] #2, the Archbishop of Canterbury hath no jurisdiction in this realm of the United States.[/blockquote]
Firstly the ABC hath influence. Second the response within “this realm” is less important than his influence over the Communion. There his response will be much more interesting. I wonder if he will follow through on his warnings? Meanwhile the Global South have their scheduled meeting in April where there will almost certainly be a response of some kind.
I am wondering when the period for consents will be over and thus when we can expect an announcement from the PB. I should know this – I am sure. Will she announce early if the consents are in from SCs and bishops w/ jurisdiction? I am not sure as votes can be changed as they had hoped in N. Michigan last year in the consent process for Forrester+. The timing may determine the GS response – we shall see.
I believe the consents will be given and we will have a complete – in your face – TEC response to the ABC, AC and the Covenant. Tragic, but surely predictable.
So room for this woman to be considered as bishop but no room for orthodox Catholics within the Church of England….
…how obvious does it need to be that this Communion has abandoned its faith. In the words of Gandalf the grey- and in the light of the Pope’s historic offer….
FLEE YOU FOOLS!
#7 while I am sympathetic to your position, I believe the ABC’s influence has been seriously, if not completely compromised by the current holder of the See. As to whether he will follow through on warnings, I severely doubt it. At best we are likely to get a stern admonition about bounds of communion along with a much stronger rebuke of some third-world anti-homosexual law being proposed.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if the ABC declared that if L.A. went ahead with consecrating/installing Glasspool that Canterbury wouldn’t be in communion with that 1 diocese? How many lines in the sand have to be crossed before they get it? Yes, go ahead and elect/consecrate. Fine and well. Then, you’re out. You can live with that anyway from all the machinations that fume up from the left coast.
Wake up, Choir Stall, you need to wake up. Breakfast is ready and the bus is coming. You have been dreaming.
(Rowan Williams invited consecrators of Gene Robinson to Lambeth. He wants everyone at the table.)
The ABC will do nothing except advance TEC’s interests.

FLEE YOU FOOLS![/blockquote] Actually the quote is, “Fly, you fools!”
The ABC will only continue to to ‘kick the can’ further down the road. Count on it.
