A Prayer for the Feast Day of James Dekoven

Almighty and everlasting God, the source and perfection of all virtues, who didst inspire thy servant James de Koven to do what is right and to preach what is true: Grant that all ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may afford to thy faithful people, by word and example, the knowledge of thy grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Thanks for posting this, Kendall. I’m sure all the friends and supporters of “the House,” i.e., Nashotah House, are gratefully remembering this godly man who played such an important part in the early history of that illustrious Anglo-Catholic seminary, founded in 1842, and where Dekoven once taught. The sad fact that the ardently pious and saintly Dekoven failed to gain the necessary consents to become a bishop after he was elected Bishop of Illinois in 1875, where many unworthy people have been confirmed since then, including most recently Mary Glasspool in LA, only goes to show how ironic the twists of history can be. And how, as Article 19 of the 39 says, the Church has often erred.

God bless Dean Robert Munday and the current faculty and students at Dekoven’s brave mission in what was then truly the wilderness, Nashotah House.
