The Seven Last Words

1. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do! (Luke 24:34)

2. This day thou shall be with me in Paradise. (Luke 24:43)

3. Woman, behold thy son…. Behold thy mother. (John 19:26, 27)

4. My God, My God! why have you forsaken me? (Matt 27:26; Mark 15:34)

5. I thirst! (John 19:28)

6. It is finished. (John 19:30)

7. Father, into Your hands I commend my spirit. (Luke 24:46)

–In the wisdom of the Church, these words have always been seen as a central resource for prayer, thought and meditation on the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ on this day.

  1. Bart Hall (Kansas, USA) says:

In #4 our lord is quoting the opening line of Psalm 22, which in verse 6 says “I am a worm and not a man.” That word translated as “worm” is תלא (tola) — it is a desert grub, probably the cochineal larva, which when crushed gives a deep crimson dye. In the time of Christ that dye was used for the high priests temple garments.

I would encourage you to read all of Psalm 22, since if it was not Christ’s life verse it most decidedly could have been.
