South Carolina Episcopal Parish becomes Christ the King

New signs will go up on the Episcopal Church on Highway 17 in Pawleys Island this summer: Christ the King, Waccamaw.

The church was formerly All Saints Waccamaw, but a settlement in a long-running lawsuit earlier this year led the Episcopal parish to give up the name.

“All Saints is such a dear name to many, a great name with meaning to a lot of people,” said Rick Bruce, senior warden of the Episcopal church vestry. “We wanted a name that would be meaningful in a different way.”

Christ the King is wonderful name. I have been part of two parishes named “Christ Church”.

Interesting. I did not realize that the Bishop has the authority to name/rename a parish. I am glad that it was done with the parish’s vestry. I hope that the parish when officially re-named will have some sort of event and invite those from the diocese as well as their own parish to be with them as they celebrate their new name. They have been through painful times and now they should celebrate a new name. I and hubby would gladly come to help celebrate. If a re-consecration is an event to be celebrated, surely a new name should be celebrated too.
