Thomas L. Friedman on Charlie Rose Speaking about Last week's Events in Europe

You know, Charlie, for 60 years you could really say being in politics, being a political leader, was, on balance, about giving things away to people. That’s what you did most of your time.

I think we’re entering an era — how long it will last, I dare not predict — where being in politics is going to be more than anything else about taking things away from people. And that shift from leaders giving things away to leaders taking things away, I don’t think we know what that looks like over time. It’s going to be very, very interesting.

In the human economy, this means the poor will “be sent away empty” and the rich “will be filled with good things”. When economists and politicians start talking about “taking away”, it is those less fortunate that have the most “taken away”. As we have seen in the past ten years, the ones who have done the most to destroy the wealth in this nation have profited mightily, the beneficiaries of arguably the most corrupt income redistribution program in American history. Yes, “taking away” will be very interesting.

As long as our elected leaders do not take away my Constitutional rights, I will be thrilled for them to “take away” what they should NEVER have had the power to “give.”

    Go for it.

What a poor commentary on leadership; which should be service. TF is no different than the rest.

  4. Daniel says:

#1 – Why do you feel that it needs to be economists and politicians to determine the distribution of goods among God’s people? Don’t you have enough trust in a sovereign God to work things out according to his purpose for good. And, if not is this life, in the life to come?

Shouldn’t it be enough for government to get off the backs of people and do no more than guarantee everyone physical security and an equal chance at doing what they want to do without trying to guarantee the results? History is littered with the bones of those who said they were “redistributing” for the greater good and all that ever happened was that their sinful natures lusted after more and more power that they used to enrich themselves and a few others while oppressing and killing the masses they purported to help.

Taking things away? Maybe if governments had not been giving handouts in the first place, citizens would not have become slaves to the governments.
