South Carolina Election Results: Haley, Barrett in GOP runoff; Democrats choose Sheheen

Brushing aside allegations of extramarital affairs, tea party favorite Nikki Haley pushed aside a tough group of political stalwarts and nearly won outright the GOP primary race for governor. Just shy of the 50 percent needed to earn the Republican bid, Haley now faces U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett in a runoff June 22.

Meanwhile, Democrats overwhelmingly chose Vincent Sheheen as their nominee for governor. Sheheen, a state senator from Camden, took 59 percent of the vote, topping Jim Rex, state superintendent of education, with 23 percent. State Sen. Robert Ford of Charleston finished with 18 percent.

Was reading about the real shocker of the SC elections which showed anti-insider sentiment to the extreme:
[blockquote] An unemployed military veteran who raised no funds and put up no campaign website shocked South Carolina’s Democratic Party leadership by capturing the nomination Tuesday to face Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint in November.

JammieWearingFool, said this about that: ” Just like everybody else I know nothing about this guy. The powers that be in the Democrat political machine offer up the lame excuse that voters may have just voted based on the alphabetic order of the candidates on the ballot.”

Robroy–It doesn’t matter. Jim DeMint got 82% of the vote in the Republican and never ran a single ad. My guess is he will get between 60 to 65% in the general election, and he won’t even need to campaign.

I don’t think DeMint has to worry. The AP reports that Greene has been charged with a felony obscenity offense that could get him five years in prison (and he has said that he will not step aside):

South Carolina’s surprise Democratic nominee to challenge U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint is facing a pending felony charge.

Court records show 32-year-old Alvin Greene was arrested in November and charged with showing obscene Internet photos to a University of South Carolina student. The felony charge carries up to five years in prison. …

Records indicate Greene showed photos to a woman and talked about going to her room at a university dorm.

The mainstream media was touting civil war in the GOP and how the GOP is falling apart. Some pretty strong primary election efforts from the “moribund” GOP. Some pretty lame primary election efforts from the Democrats (South Carolina and Arkansas).

robroy–I tuned back in here this morning to take back my earlier prediction. DeMint will probably get 80% in the general election thanks to Mr. Greene’s felony indictment. My question is how did the hot shot press in SC miss this one? Answer–even in tiny, conservative SC the few reporters we actually have left on newspapers remain totally in the tank for the Dems.
