A Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel article on the Presiding Bishop

Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, chief pastor of the world’s 2.4 million Episcopalians, downplayed the schism that has rocked the church over its liberal views on homosexuality and gay clergy, and emphasized the importance of mission and ministry both at home and abroad.

“We need to speak the good news where people can hear it,” said Jefferts Schori, who planned to visit some of the local diocese’s poverty ministries – The Gathering meal program, the Red Door clothing ministry and an indigent burial program – during her stay.

“One of my jobs is to tell the story of the good works being done here,” she said in brief remarks to local media at the diocese’s All Saints Cathedral downtown.

Who fed ’em this language? Wow.

“chief pastor of the world’s 2.4 million Episcopalians”

    That’s funny.

    1. Chief pastor? Is that in the Constitution and Canons?
    2. the world’s…2.4 million Episcopalians. I suppose that makes us a bit larger than the United House of Prayer for All People of the Church on the Rock of the Apostolic Faith.

The person called Presiding ‘Bishop’ of the TEC is quite simply NOT chief pastor of anything at all, not even of my cats. She is not so described in TEC’s Most Sacred, Almighty, Omniscient, and Omnipotent Canons. And we all know that outside the Canons nothing has any existence whatsoever. Mrs Schori has simply (to use a heraldic term) ‘assumed’ something to which she is literally not and never ever was entitled. We most certainly don’t commemorate her in the Prayers of the People at my parish church, and never would. If it were required, I’d find a way around it.

I just wish that, at east occasionally, she would mention that one of her jobs is to tell people that God loved them so much that He sent His only Son to die for them . . .

She may be unaware of that #4. Larry

“Jefferts Schori said Friday that the Episcopal Church has more relationships within the Anglican Communion than it did a decade ago…” I have to admit I have a sick fascination with folks who can lie with such elan.

Katherine Jefferts Schori is, officially and by definition, the bishop whose job it is to preside over the meetings of the Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops. Hence the term ‘Presiding Bishop.’ Yes, she does preside over the Episcopal Church insofar as representing the Church as part of the Anglican Communion is concerned, but that’s as far as it goes. Lately, she has aspirations of styling herself as a ‘metropolitan,’ or archbishop…..something which she is NOT, and does not have the authority to do in any case, and is not designated as such by General Convention, which has the sole power to do.
