The Super Bowl is Sunday evening, but members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Prattville hope that won’t keep people from coming out to enjoy a special service filled with fun music in a casual, relaxed atÂmosphere.
The service, held by the church on the first Sunday of each month, is called “EvenÂsong, With a Twist!” The service combines traditional liturgy with modern-day music and feaÂtures the band Epiphany, which is made up of parish members.
A year ago, the church held a special service called a U2charist — a communion servÂice that replaces traditional hymns with the famed Irish rock band U2’s most popular and spiritually moving songs. The U2charist service was open to the public, and proved to be very popular.
[blockquote] “And, if you don’t feel better after you leave church than you did when you came in, what’s the use of going?”[/blockquote]
I think, by this standard, beer and barbeque and hundreds of other things are more effective than church.
A rock band putting its name in the central act of Christian worship is well, blasphemous.
Strange how things change, it wasn’t that long ago when “Super Bowl” Sunday, meant “Souper Bowl Sunday” when the young folk of the church stood at the door afterword with soup bowls, and collected $s for the needy.. Oh well, another tradition down the drain.

The story unwittingly made the point of the story. “A year ago, the church held a special service called a U2charist…”
Exactly. The shelf life of liturgical toys is very, very short. Have to constantly make up something “new” to entertain the remaining attendees.
Still does in this diocese. Souper Bowl Sunday is well and alive in some places.

Exactly. Aging boomers (I am one) trying to be hip. I suspect the young find them embarrassing and wonder why they don’t have enough confidence in their traditions to celebrate them unashamedly.
As a member of St. Marks I can only say this has been a real blessing in my life.
