(CBC) Kirpan banned at Quebec national assembly

Quebec’s governing Liberals voted in favour of an opposition motion to ban ceremonial daggers from the provincial legislature.

The Parti Québécois tabled its motion Wednesday ”” requesting the government prevent Sikhs from carrying their ceremonial daggers into the national assembly building ”” and the legislature voted unanimously in favour.

    This article will be a bit confusing to Americans who use “table” to mean “withdraw from consideration.” In the entire English-speaking world outside the USA you “table” a motion to bring it forward for discussion, and you “shelve” it to halt consideration, at least temporarily.

    “Everything’s still on the table …” reflects the wider usage within current American speech.

    I am glad to see that the government is protecting us at every turn. Anytime something comes to the government’s awareness, in its great benevolence, it determines whether or not it is worth banning.
