Gordon Baker–It is time for the Anglican Church of Canada to Change its Name

Today we are developing new mature relationships with the aboriginal peoples of Canada and they are our sisters and brothers in faith and mission. Our clergy in Quebec are becoming totally bilingual so as to work comfortably within a French culture. The tag in western Canada of being the “English Church” no longer holds true.

I submit that it is time for us to be fully grown up and give thanks for all we have received from the Church of England, and others, but have a name that more truly expresses who we are. I believe that the name, “The Episcopal Church of Canada,” would do just that.

Hilarious. Why not just merge with the TEClub? Two sinking ships can go down together.

I personally suggest that they rename themselves “The Church of Seinfeld” because the Anglican Church of Canada really is becoming all about nothing.

TECNorth: a wholly owned subsidiary of the Episcopal Church,

I think it is a great idea, actually, since their theology is no longer remotely Anglican, just like TEC in the U.S. Since they are so closely identified with each other across the communion, and since their theology is so radically different, this change actually makes sense.

    The Gay Church of Canada?

It is too simple to view the ACC this way. Toronto, Montreal, & Vancouver are the Dioceses that make the news, but there are many faithful Anglicans throughout the rest of the Country. There are no ACNA parishes in Alberta for example. This is not an oversight. There are so many faithful Anglican parishes on the Prairie that there is little need for the ACNA yet. I can just hear my Alberta friends groaning about this story.

Still I do think a name change is kind of a fun idea. They could be TECC and be known as “Mini Me”.

Has everyone forgotten the ACC’s near absorption into “The United Church of Canada” via “The Plan for Union – 1972?” If they were willing previously to blindly risk descending into nothingness, why not give it another try? After all, it’s been three decades since their earlier mindless, if unsuccessful venture.

    Church of What’s Happnin’ Now

Reminds me of the episode of the Red Green show when
Harold gets married. Before it burned he and his bride were to be married at the Church of the (W)hol(l)y Unnecessary.
