Every other Wednesday, right after school at 2:45, the newest club at Rutherford High, the atheist club, meets in Room 13-211.
Last Wednesday, Jim Dickey, the president, started out by asking his fellow student atheists (there are a few agnostics, too) whether they wanted to put together an all-atheist Ultimate Frisbee team for a charity event.
“We can pay the entry fee from the club treasury,” said Michael Creamer, the atheists’ faculty adviser, who urged them to take part.
Of course they do believe in something. I find this type of article very shallow.
Well, at least they’re raising money for a charity. I’ve puzzled over why atheists claim they can be “good without God” but stay away from doing corporate good works. It dawned on me that if they actually DID do good works, they would encounter fragile people who only had faith sustaining them and turn-arounds that were something like miraculous.
How would atheists handle that sensitively and be able to retain their atheism in the face of strong faith and things that couldn’t be explained? They couldn’t, and that’s why they stay away. So, bravo to the kids who are at least trying to reach out. I’ll bet they learn something and shed the atheism eventually. 😉
