Doug Leblanc: Interpreting the First Epistle to Central Floridians

Catholic order matters. Rowan Williams understands the importance of Catholic order and will not reward actions that threaten such order. Will the Anglican Right now step up and show at least as much commitment to Catholic order?

RW values Catholic order??? Does that include undermining the unanimous will of his fellow primates (with whom he is supposed to be on an equal basis)? As I said at SF to the ABC:

We know whose fingerprints are on the bloody knife that killed the DeS communique. The orthodox did hold out hope that this last document might bring relief to our suffering. Your boorish maneuverings were apparent to all. So when you send a letter feigning to give advice to the orthodox, don’t be surprised when it is not heeded.

And how is the consent process for Fr. Lawrence going for South Carolina? A couple more U.S. dioceses have just authorized same-sex blessings, and there is no discipline in sight for them. Meanwhile, why would anyone think that a “Windsor” bishop would ever be replaced by another? It is already obvious that the three remaining non-WO dioceses will never get another catholic bishop in TEC. The same goes for the “Windsor” places. When +Howe leaves, he will be replaced with someone who will toe the line on same-sex behavior. I respect Doug LeBlanc, et al., but they’re kidding themselves. The American Province is irretrievably disfunctional and cannot be considered a “catholic” institution.

I think that this supposes that the orthodox really care about the AC at this point. We have been begging the ABC for aid for 4 going on 5 years and all we have gotten is dithering and talk. The Global South has acted when the ABC and the official AC would not. At this point I could care less whether I am in communion with Canterbury. It took a lot of dithering and inaction to get me to this point but here we are. I no longer find the arguments of Doug LeBlanc or the ACI useful or compelling.

What is being said above will continue to be said and acted upon. The actions that we have seen throughout the AC in the west are people leaving – walking away. Ironically, many are leaving and walking towards true “catholic order” called the Roman Catholic Church and/or the Orthodox Church. This is where true catholic Church order is (now) found in the west.

It is sad to see the AC breaking apart and the ABC just compromising away the order once found in the AC. Yes, once there was order. It was a time when words meant what they said and thus, trust was a by-product of words spoken. Remember? I do.

Who trusts the ABC? Trust is the coin of the realm of the AC. Has the ABC lost that coin? That is the crucial question that must be asked.

I pray he will act to uphold “catholic order” on All Saints Day 2007.

Of course, it is stating the obvious to point out that nothing from the ABC to date indicates that any TEC bishop – aside possibly from NH – has any cloud over their relationship with Canterbury.

  6. dwstroudmd+ says:

Isn’t catholic order just theological cover for the Anglican interpretation of polity by one particular Archbishop? Catholic order has a clear meaning historically and one that determines teaching in the nature of the order: form, matter, intent. ECUSA/TEC’s actions don’t fit that model, much less the teaching catholic. So why is it that polity is order? Or do I misunderstand?

  7. Bill Matz says:

A good chance for ABC to prove it would be to come over for the consecration of Mrk Lawrence, especially if he does not receive consents.

RE: “The diocese is more than a ‘local branch’ of a national organisation.”

    You got that right!

But my favorite line — noted for its special adjunct stature — is this one: “The provincial structure is significant.”

Reminds me of the boss assuring an underling that “your job is really really significant, Mr. Peon.”

I was following him until that last one on “Catholic order”. What rubbish.
