A special U.S. committee charged with reducing the federal deficit is entering a critical week for reaching a deal but has not considered extending its Nov. 23 deadline, a panel member said Monday.
“Every member understands that time is running out,” House Democrat Chris Van Hollen, a member of the “super committee,” said in an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program. “This is the moment to get it (a deal) done if we’re going to get it done.
“The clock’s ticking. We’ve got just a little over two weeks and that includes the time that it will take to put the final touches on any agreement that we might be able to reach,” he said.
It won’t do anything. Washington will not do anything until the economy collapses and we have actual riots in the streets.
I agree. At best we will be informed of cuts in spending that are nothing more than (fictional) reductions in the trajectory of future spending.
And then the joke will be on us again when years down the road, none of those cuts really takes place anyway.
The economy will not get better until people realize that government is the problem, not the solution.
I made a comment regarding on T19 the existance and powers of this super-committee when it when it was discussed just after the enactment of its legislation.
Basically, I thought then and I think now that the lack of strong left-wing reistance to the super-committee’s possible threat to social programs was strongly out weighed by the opportunity that the left-wing sees in the potential for a permanent disembowelment of our national defense capabilities by the actions of the committee.
Thus, the super-committee, as I see it, is nothing more than a Trojan Horse of the radical left. The people who sold this to Congress could sell ice cubes in January to people who live within the arctic circle.
4,well, if so, given that the POTUS, now uses the military as his own private praetorian guard, going to war without the consent of Congress, that may not be a bad thing.
I also happen to think that the committee is a blatantly un-constitutional delegation of the Congress’s power to appropriate money, but then no one seems to care about the Constitution any more.
