Timothy George and Chuck Colson–A letter to evangelical Christians on Obama's Contraceptive Mandate

We evangelicals must stand unequivocally with our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters. Because when the government violates the religious liberty of one group, it threatens the religious liberty of all.
Many bishops have already declared that they will not obey this unjust law. The penalty for such a move would be severe. Catholic hospitals, universities, and other organizations would be forced to pay punitive fines ($2,000 per employee) for refusing to purchase insurance that violates the teaching of their church.
For some institutions, it would spell the end of their existence””and their far-reaching service to the public and the needy.

BRAVO. Absolutely right. Chuck Colson and Timothy George have nailed it. They aren’t exaggerating one bit.

I especially welcome thier call for folks who’ve been slack or negligent in not signing the Manhattan Declaration yet to go ahead and do so soon. It’s high time to stand up and be counted, and to send the White House a message this administartion can’t ignore.

I call attention to the fact that ++Robert Duncan has issued a similarly strong statement on behalf of the ACNA, expressing our 100% solidarity with our Catholic brothers and sisters on this conflict. Likewise, Rick Warren has issued a very clear and emphatic denunciation of this outrageous and inexcusable new federal mandate approved by the president.

I hope this groundswell turns into a tsunami. The backlash needs to be so strong, so massive and vehement, that the Obama administration won’t dare to attempt any such foolhardy and oppressive measures in the future.

What were they thinking in DC?? It’s insane.

This is a key “sign of the times.” (I don’t mean the end times). It is further evidence of how our precious “separation” of church and state has degenerated over time into the virtual DIVORCE of Christianity (all biblical kinds) and public life. It is just the latest, and most alarming, sign that we Anglicans desperately need to rediscover how to be counter-cultural Christians and come to terms with our scary new “post-Christendom” (post established church) social context. Given our state church heritage, that will be exceedingly difficult and wrenching, but it’s urgently necessary.
