IVF clinics in the UK are practising aggressive fertility treatments that are putting women and children at unjustified risk, experts say.
The commercially driven industry uses unnecessary procedures, high doses of powerful drugs and risky interventions to help desperate couples spending thousands of pounds to conceive.
This is why the professional bodies, and especially those with unusual authority over human beings – medicine for the start and end of life, psychology for what is pathology and what is ‘normal’ – need to be kept under close democratic accountability. Left to themselves, they will seek as much independence to conduct their profession as they sit fit. And they have too much authority to do so – as seen with euthanasia, abortion, and IVF – without being supervised by the institutions of democracy.
