GetReligion Nails the NY Times for Its One-Sided Coverage of a Recent Episcopal Church Story

Read it all. This applies in both directions, too. There should be at least one reappraiser and one reasserter quoted in the story.

One of the interesting aspects of Christ Church leaving TEC is that some who were very vocal before the vote was taken that we we should reconcile etc, are now part of the group that is suing Christ Church on behalf of the Diocese of Georgia.

In other words, let’s reconcile as long as reconciliation means that I get the outcome that I want. However, when the vote goes against me, I am going to launch a lawsuit to get what I want, reconciliation be damned.

It is ironic that the diocese invokes the tradition of Whitefield and Wesley to justify the litigation. Their is a story about the drunk who bragged to Whitefield that he was a follower of the preacher. Whitefield replied that if he were a follower of Jesus he would not be there drunk. Now the fact that he was drunk would not be noticed.

Also not mentioned in Ms Goodman’s article is the fact that many of the miffed dissidents had not attended Christ Church for years- yet came out of the woodwork to complain to the NYTimes.

The Savannah Morning News reporter did a much better job of offering that newspaper’s readership a balanced view of what has happened at Christ Church.
