(Mail on Sunday) Hunt for next Archbishop reaches deadlock after 'snubbing' frontrunner Sentamu

The secretive panel choosing the next Archbishop of Canterbury is rumoured to have turned down the original frontrunner, the Archbishop of York John Sentamu, amid signs that it is deadlocked.

Speculation was rife last night that the 16-strong Crown Nominations Commission was not convinced the high-profile Dr Sentamu was the best candidate, and was torn between two other candidates, the Bishop of Norwich Graham James and the Bishop of Durham Justin Welby.

Sources said Ugandan-born Dr Sentamu, who had been tipped as the Church’s first black Archbishop of Canterbury, was a popular and charismatic leader, but may lack the diplomatic skills for Lambeth Palace.

    Fascinating.

Graham Jones is a raving revisionist. So you’ve got a choice between a revisionist activist who supports blessing sex acts between two men, and a couple of moderates.

Thank God some people on the commission held out against Jones.

“…but may lack the diplomatic skills for Lambeth Palace.”

Too much diplomacy and too little frank and forthright leadership coming from Lambeth Palace are what have gotten us into this mess in the Anglican Communion.

Lambeth Palace under Rowan Williams has been more like a hotbed of Borgian princes operating as they did in the Late Middle Ages/Early Renaissance than a place of deliberate, open and honest Christian leadership.

Lambeth Palace gas not recently been a place where the archbishop makes his “yes, yes” and his “no, no.”

  3. Marie Blocher says:

A little less Anglican diplomacy and a little more African integrity would be good.

Sarah, if they were to be so foolish as to choose +Jones, they might just as well re-title the office as Chief Lunatic of Canterbury. Better to choose between two moderates, and that’s why the Bishop of Durham would be my choice…..even if he does favor women in the episcopacy, which would be the CofE’s choice and not ours.

While I’m sure he is, Graham James was the person to whom I was referring. ; > ) [from Good Sarah]

Is Graham James a flaming revisionist? Of course I suppose they don’t have a lot of solid believers left in the episcopal ranks.
