Where is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s statement that Bishop Lawrence has stuck with what the Archbishop of Canterbury wrote about when all this broke out after 2003? The Windsor Report? Where is his statement that a man of God has done all he can do, only to be removed by the liberal wing of Anglicanism in the United States? I don’t think they are Anglican any more by their attacks upon the godly. This is the largest snubbing by TEc of the Archbishop that the world has ever seen! Grab the bull by the horns, Rowan Williams! Be a Christian standing for what you are about! You have very little time left to make a substantive comment on what is ripping Christ’s Church apart while you are the head of this Communion.
Milton,
In response to the dozen previous depositions, including +Henry Scriven, and consecration of Mary Glasspool, the ABoC sank the Covenant at Jamaica at KJS request, and then elevated her to overlordship of the standing committee. He is more likely to stage a coup at the Vatican to install her as Pope than do anything at all to support Lawrence. Although you may get one of those statements designed to be read 2 ways, that the current unpleasantness is regrettable, that bishops are the traditional agents of communion within the church, that TEC has acted in a way not exactly consistent with Anglican tradition, but that recent actions of South Carolina were “not helpful.” I don’t see that fixing anything.
On the other hand, not a word escaped his mouth over gay marriages performed by TEC bishops, or the heretical legislation of last summer’s GC, so it may be you will not even get the milquetoast statement.

Williams has one foot out the door. He is unlikely to do anything, and is more than happy to turn over any repercussions to his successor. And besides, he tacitly supports TEC, and is undoubtedly privately accepting of the inhibition as he would be of the deposition. If he didn’t mind J. I. Packer getting kicked out of his church, Lawrence doesn’t stand a chance.
James,
This is the GS Steering Committee. It is fairly common in such organizations for the Chairman and Secretary to sign a document on behalf of the organization. It is not a petition. All the other steering committee members were consulted (including, one assumes, those primates not in attendance at the consecration, who could be reached), and all members of the steering committee cc’ed, and you have certainly heard no objections.
Most of the bishops of the GS are no longer in communion in any form with TEC, and therefore TEC’s actions are irrelevant. In any of several meetings, GS and its various subsets (Gafcon, CAPA, etc) have expressed firm statements of communion with South Carolina and its bishop, and other forms of support.
I am sure, as more meetings take place, you will see further support shown by large numbers of bishops, clergy and laity from the GS.
I’d say that, since Bishop Lawrence has received so many words of support, it would appear that Schori and Company have once again shot themselves in the foot…….not that they really care that anyone thinks they have. Actually, they are now Persona non Grata, and they have no one to blame for it than themselves.
Tjmcmahon’s point at #10 is a good one. The Global South tend to act in concert to a remarkable degree.
Obviously there are differences of opinion from time to time. But even those waters are muddied by mischievous liberal fibs, such as the recent suggestion by a tendentious priest of Melanesia that his primates did not support the Global South condemnation of TEC’s authorisation of same sex blessings. This turned out to be a fabrication.
The Global South has a steering committee in order to facilitate getting out rapid responses to situations, where required. This particular response will come as no surprise for the reasons set out by tjmcmahon – most if not all of the Global South primates are in impaired communion with TEC, but in full communion with +Lawrence and Dio South Carolina. This latest communication is no more than we would expect.
I hope to see many more of these in the coming week. The Archbishop of Canterbury needs to put his two cents in, also.
It would be nice if he would, but given his past record…………….

Wherever the head goes the body follows.

I would take a letter like that in my mail box any day of the week! Very uplifting.
Why didn’t the other primates sign the letter? Several of them gathered, but only two would sign the letter?
