I guess I’m just concerned that we’ve allowed Christmas to become like a cartoon. Cutesy, heart-warming but lacking substance and quickly forgotten until the next year when the same thing is repeated. Christmas pageants with cute little tykes are fine as long as the participants stick around and grow in faith and understanding. We need to do a better job of that.

Teatime2, Rediscover some Christian traditions about Advent and Christmas. Don’t get sucked into all that secular “Christmas” stuff. I have made it a habit to not listen to all the Christmas Carols blaring since November on the radio. We prefer a radio station that actually plays Advent music until Christmas and then Christmas music until Epiphany. The Advent Wreath was the first decoration to be taken out and displayed. We like a Advent Wreath Service based on the BCP. Very simple but a lovely way to have a daily reminder what Advent and Christmas is all about. The service really does remind us the importance and the real meaning of Advent and Christmas.

To answer Kendall’s+ question, what moves me every year is the basic Mystery of Christmas- The Incarnation! One of our priests preached on that. Yep, want to understand Christmas beyond all that secular hype? You have to understand the basic reason why it happened at all. Christianity is unique among religions in that part of the story is that the Creator of the Universe came among us as one of us FOR US!! No other reason! Once you understand that, you, too, will sing like Mary!
