(TEC OPA) TEC Joint Nominating Committee for the next Presiding Bishop issues a Survey

The Episcopal Church Joint Nominating Committee for the Presiding Bishop (JNCPB) has issued a survey and is inviting responses from all Episcopalians.

“In the summer of 2015, the Church will again assume the responsibility for electing the next Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church,” explained Sally Johnson, co-chair of the Committee. “To assist us in that work, the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop has issued a survey seeking data that will be helpful in our process of developing the profile of the type of leader the Church is seeking.”

Recently, at the request of the Committee, the Secretary of General Convention, the Canon Rev. Michael Barlowe, sent an email to all bishops, deputies, alternate deputies and members of Executive Council informing them of the upcoming survey. That message contained a very brief description of the duties of the Presiding Bishop which may be helpful to anyone who wishes to complete the survey.

I’d like to see that brief description of the duties of the Presiding Bishop!

Question 13 is telling, isn’t it?

    GENDER (choose one):
    – Male
    – Female
    – Transgender

  3. Dick Mitchell says:

@Pigeon – at least there were only three. I did an online survey recently with a literature group, and there were nine categories for gender.

I will give them a point for honesty. Toward the end of the survey, there was the question (paraphrased) “are you a member of the Episcopal Church” to which I answered “no”. Even though I answered “no”, the survey later asked me (also paraphrased) “how long have you been Episcopalian” to which I could answer “over 50 years”. In most surveys, you would never get the second question if you answered “no” to the first one. But in TEC, at this time, there are more living former members than current members. Whether this was a recognition of the fact, or just sloppy survey construction, I don’t know.
So I told them what I thought. No doubt, as the article the other day translating what the English say into what the English mean, TEC will “hear” me and other “traditionalists”- but are they listening? I very much doubt it.
I would encourage everyone to take 10 minutes to do the survey- I very much doubt the opinion among the laity of TEC is what the leadership thinks it is.
I wonder if the “restructuring” committee has even consider the best restructuring plan available- restructure the PB’s office back to what it was intended to be- someone to preside over HoB meetings.

LOL. I did the survey! I noticed they are least honest about which entity in South Carolina as in TEC in SC. Give them credit for that much! However, they will not like my comments!! 😉

#2 — Oh! I didn’t even see that, as I skipped all the demographic questions. The surprise is either that there are only three choices, or that they asked at all.
