[blockquote]Using biblical periscopes as a frame of reference[/blockquote]
Had me puzzled for a moment, but probably useful when submerging below the waterline.
[blockquote]The day concluded with the business meeting, chaired by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori…..The most senior bishop present was Bishop William Sanders, the first bishop of the Diocese of East Tennessee, who is the third most senior bishop in The Episcopal Church [/blockquote]
I see.
Never fear, Bishop Dan is here for a more informative and engaging account, written in English.
From the Bishop Dan account
[blockquote]Then, for the first time since arriving here last week, we formally convened the House of Bishops for a business session, with the Presiding Bishop in the chair and Roberts’ Rules in effect. The most substantive item to be considered in this session was a proposal from the Office for Pastoral Development (Bishop Clay Matthews) that the House call for the drafting of a canonical change to be presented to the 2015 General Convention that would bar diocesan staff members from being elected to the Standing Committees of the various dioceses (and some would extend that ban to General Convention deputations and Diocesan Councils). I spoke against the proposal. While it might be laudable in principle, it can easily invoke the Law of Unintended Consequences in smaller dioceses where the “gene pool” is already pretty shallow. It seems to be in response to a particularly nasty situation that we were not told the details of[/blockquote]
Wonder what that is all about?
Sound like a resounding vote of confidence by the Bishops in their staff…but hang on a minute, aren’t Bishops on the Diocesan Staff, with salaries, and offices, and benefits, and pensions, and staff cars etc?
Heh heh – have the Bishops just debarred themselves from attending General Convention? As Bp Dan says, the law of unintended consequences!
Encouraging to see the PB’s staff in the form of Clay Matthews is of the same caliber as her lawyers and her expert witness, and you don’t need a periscope to see that.
I am still puzzling over these biblical periscopes – I don’t remember reading about them being dug up, nor any reference to them in the Scriptures. Where is my concordance?
“The afternoon started with a Town Hall meeting and the discussions were private.”
Ummmmmm……right. A completely private town hall meeting. How, exactly, do they describe a private, closed door, secret session as a “town hall meeting?”
If only we had known that periscopes were included in our copies of the ESV study Bible, we could have used them to see what was going on at the secret town hall meeting.
What a bunch of ultramaroons. And I am not just talking about the color of their favorite mitres.

For now we see through a glass darkly …
Is it related to this?
