Role of African churches 'absolutely critical' says Archbishop Welby

Archbishop Justin met the delegation during their visit to the UK to present the strategic priorities of the African Catholic bishops’ conferences and establish co-operation in addressing urgent issues on the African continent….

Archbishop Justin said: “I welcome the priority being given by SECAM to reconciliation and evangelisation and look forward to opportunities to collaborate in this work.

“As we approach 2015 and the shift from Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals, the role of African churches is absolutely critical….”

Once, when flying across the US, I was stranded in Covington. I was told my connecting flight was full. I replied that I had a ticket for the flight. I was told that while I had a ticket, I didn’t have a seat.

When I read the ABC’s comments that the role of the African churches is critical, I hear similar words. Yes, they’re critical – they just don’t have a seat or a say. The ABC says to the Global South – just shut up and look good for the pictures – The Episcopal Church pays our bills.

The transition from reconciliation and evangelization to sustainable development goals was abrupt enough to give one whiplash. I thought evangelism was sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
Forty percent of Israel’s vegetables are grown in the Arava and Negev Deserts. I wonder if agricultural scientists could apply some of their techniques to the Sahara.

The heading in the original article (on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s web-site) is:

“African churches ‘vital’ in tackling climate change, says Archbishop”

Meaning he and others want to co-opt the Anglican churches of Africa to their secular political agenda. How strange – its not like the Anglican churches in the west have allowed themselves to be co-opted to secular political agendas… is it? 😉

Agree with Jill. The transition was so abrupt I was left wondering did they get together to discuss climate change or evangelism? Or both? Which is it? still confused…..
