Gomez””Scandalous if gay Bishop attends meeting with his partner

It would be “scandalous” if gay Anglican Bishop Canon V. Gene Robinson appeared at the upcoming Anglican Lambeth Conference in July with his partner, Archbishop Drexel Gomez told The Guardian Monday.

The upcoming conference, held once every 10 years, is expected to see the coming together of a number of Anglican Bishops at the University of Kent in Canterbury. But because of the on-going schism within the Communion as a result of the ordination of Robinson almost six years ago, Gomez said some provinces recently indicated they would not attend the upcoming conclave.

“There are at least four provinces in Africa that have either said they will not attend or are still considering if they will attend, but there are three who said they will definitely not be attending,” Archbishop Gomez said in a telephone interview yesterday.

    Can’t say ya weren’t warned…

  2. Phil says:

    Shouldn’t be a problem. Robinson’s not invited – right?

  3. SaintCyprian says:

Surely it would be “scandalous” if Robinson were to attend at all, given that he hasn’t been invited.

  4. pendennis88 says:

It can’t be very scandalous if no one is moved to do anything about it.

  5. Hakkatan says:

St Cyprian, he may not have been invited to the Lambeth Conference itself, but he has freedom to travel and to visit places and friends in England — if some of those friends are Episcopal bishops who are in England at the same time, that is a remarkable coincidence.

His friends of course, want to have him be seen and heard, so as to astonish those who oppose him with all his good qualities, and so open their hearts to acceptance of partnered homosexuals.

It is bad manners, but it is also politics, and those who want him there are using his visit as a protest and an educational event.

Don’t be surprised if Vickie and partner show up at Lambeth during their honeymoon. After all, the current crisis isn’t about him, is It? He says it isn’t. And since when has a no-no stopped him from doing anything…

  7. The_Archer_of_the_Forest says:

Comment deleted. It does not address the post.

  8. Wilfred says:

Well, if Mr Robinson does honeymoon in England, he should avoid those areas under sharia law.

  9. SaintCyprian says:

#5, I’d like to think even he would realise how sad and embarrassing it would be to show up despite not having an invite.

  10. robroy says:

I doubt Mr and Mr Robinson would be embarrassed at all. Rather they would gleefully take advantage of all the cameras and wail about the inhumanity of it all. What a crucified place to be!

  11. francis says:

No, no, no. He shouldn’t have the freedom to travel anywhere he wants and upset the delicate balances that exist. Probably better if he were to travel in the Holy Land for awhile. Uh oh, not there either!

  12. libraryjim says:

I think RobRoy has the realistic view of the matter, based on past performances.

  13. Chazaq says:

Then why does Gomez want all the global south bishops to be there and lend credibility to this scandalous event?

  14. HowieG says:

The best thing is for all the archbishops to attend Lambeth. Should Robinson & company show up, or if Schori begins her diatribes, then the orthodox bishops can all walk out en mass. After a few walk outs, the message should clear enough. The resulting publicity would speak volumes about the amount of Church-wide support the revisionist have.

    Reply to #14.

    Howie, not a bad idea.

If only archbishops from the provinces who right now won’t attend Lambeth were to attend and to express their authority in the manner you mentioned, it would convey a very strong message.

  16. Jeffersonian says:

I’d be shocked if VGR and the missus(?) manage to stay away from Lambeth. I fully expect a scene to be made, well-attended by the media.

  17. azusa says:

The June Bride will definitely be there. A series of meetings is being coordinated with the ‘Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement’ and ‘Changing Attitude’.

  18. naab00 says:

Drexel, prepare for the scandal then: make sure you’re not involved. Go to GAFCON. Avoid Lambeth.

  19. tired says:

Here is an open question for the primates: will the covenant, as written, prevent such scandal in the future? If so, then how?

  20. the roman says:

It was my understanding that Mr. Robinson said if elected he would not use his position as Bishop to promote homosexuality. Would he then be attending Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement’ and ‘Changing Attitude’ in the capacity of a layman?

I could be mistaken on my presumption as I received this information 2nd hand.

  21. Sarah1 says:

I’m afraid that Archbishop Gomez’s ideas of what is “scandalous” are rather different from ECUSA’s.

ECUSA is not particularly scandalized by giving open communion to Hindus, druid priests, sufi eucharists, Islamopalian clergy, and on and on it goes.

No, I think that Gomez’s idea of scandal is rather different from ECUSA’s. “Unembarrassable” not not be a word, but TEC certainly lives it.

  22. azusa says:

#20: You will have to ask Martin Reynolds that, but I guess the answer is ‘no’, as VGR is seen as ‘their’ bishop.
But he & his “husband”-to-be will be there.
