The Very Rev. Peter Eaton, dean of St. John’s Cathedral in Denver, Colorado, was elected as bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida on Jan. 31, pending the required consents from a majority of bishops with jurisdiction and standing committees of The Episcopal Church.
Congratulations to Dean Eaton! We have visited his cathedral in Denver, and it certainly seemed to be a lively, exciting congregation.
In 2008 Dean Eaton was a nominee for bishop of Maryland, and I heard him at one of the “walkabouts.” (Eaton withdrew before the convention.) I am fairly sure that Eaton has been a candidate several times in episcopal elections — anyone know how many?
I find myself reflecting on the career track for Episcopal clergy. I have had several faithful rectors assure me that there is “no way” that they would ever consider putting themselves up for an episcopal position. So there seems to be two career tracks: one for clergy usually serving in parishes who have no interest in the episcopacy, and a smaller group of clergy who are actively interested in serving as bishop and who regularly are nominees in episcopal elections.
It appears the final ballot was between Eaton and Battle.
Hi Dick at #1, what does +Eaton believe?
