“Never talk when you can nod, and never nod when you can wink, and never write an email because it’s death. You’re giving prosecutors all the evidence we need.”
–Eliot Spitzer in an interview with ABC News 2 years ago which was replayed this past Monday on Nightline (You can watch the Nightline Video report here; the quote is about 26 seconds before the end)
He forgot “never wire money across state lines in furtherance of a criminal pursuit.”

#2 Chris Hathaway says:
“…the stupidest most arrogant idiot in modern politics…”
In a field so bursting at the seams with powerful contenders, I would hesitate to award the laurel to any single individual. I think the judges will eventually have to grant a blanket award.
You’re right Ross, the harvest is plentiful for morons like this. He just seesm to be the stellar candidate of the day. And I have a real animus towards those who prosecute others with the law being themselves breakers of the law. And when the law that traps him is a law he helped create in order to gain scalps for his political carreer, well, the irony is too rich.
“…men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”
John 3:19b-20 (New International Version)
There is a pretty strong psychology at work with Spitzer and the like. They hate themselves for what they do, so they hate anything that reminds themselves of what they hate about themselves. I would be willing to bet that Spitzer hated the fact that he kept being drawn to prostitutes and squandered so much of his resources on sex with prostitutes. So, naturally he hated prostitutes and prostitution and worked very hard to stamp out all prostitution rings, with the exception of the one he used.
I feel sorry for him and I am glad he is out of office. While I cannot condone what he did or does, I would be willing to be that he feels some sense of relief that the charade is over and he doesn’t have to pretend anymore. I pray that he uses this to come to grips with the state of his soul and to seek forgiveness from God and his family and will submit to his wife’s judgement about what will be best for the family and her. I also pray that he seeks God’s grace to turn around his life and turn it over to God.

Eliott Spitzer does not strike me as a man very concerned about the state of his soul. This is the man who described himself as “a f_____ steamroller,” who threatened to cut off an assemblyman’s head, who referred to an opposing politician as “old and senile.” This might be the start of some self-reflection, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.
Catholic Mom.
Paul was a “steamroller” as well and God turned him around. Zacceus was one too who had no time for the poor or anyone else but himself and Jesus found him. Never underestimate God’s ability to reach us when we hit bottom.

Well, if Elliott Spitzer falls out of his Mercedes and lands on his butt in the road, there may be hope for him. We can only pray. 🙂 I have not found that many of these arrogant politicians that get caught with their pants down find redemption — I’m thinking here of my own ex-governor and a certain ex-president.
How hard it is for a rich man (or a powerful man) to enter the kingdom of God. If we are concerned for his soul we would do well to pray for his merciless punishment. Only by being brought down to the dust will the hearts of the powerful and wicked like him turn around.
