Ruth Gledhill Interviews Archbishop Greg Venables

In an interview with me while he was in Canada, Archbishop Gregory Venables explained why he will be attending both the Global Anglican Future Conference next month in Jordan and Israel, and the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury, Kent in July.

The Archbishop of the Southern Cone said: ‘I will be at Gafcon and also I am going to be at Lambeth. I think that is pretty important from the point of view of you guys [meaning the Press. rg].

‘Someone’s got to be there to talk to you about what is going on.’ [Too right, and initial impressions indicate we’re going to have even less access than last time. It’s nice to know that at least one Bishop is prepared to sup with us sinners, the few there are left. rg]

AB Greg continued: ”That was one of the reasons why I eventually made a final decision to go, which was only recently.

‘I think someone has got to go and show their face and speak to the situation.’

Read it all.

    Marvelous. A voice for sanity.
And based on what we’ve heard from him lately, what a voice that will be!

Yes! I fully agree with him that someone must go to Lambeth to represent what the rest of the communion is doing. At the very least it should be an orthodox witness to Lambeth’s irrelevancy, speaking truth to pomposity.

I wish all the other Primates would go to Lambeth and make their stand. Don’t play their silly games and small group parlor tricks. Take over the damn show! What’s Rowan going to do? Kick them out?

RE: “I fully agree with him that someone must go to Lambeth to represent what the rest of the communion is doing.”

That happened in 1998, when there was an “orthodox witness”. And nothing came of it other than Lambeth 1.10, which as we know . . . is unenforceable. People can go speak truth to pomposity till they are blue in the face but it will accomplish essentially nothing other than the similar actions of Archbishop Mouneer did as an orthodox Primate engaging in the farce of a meeting of the JSC at the New Orleans HOB meeting.

At the end of the day, his presence lent validation to the JSC’s “declaration” that TEC was in compliance. A pity that he could not have boycotted the charade as Archbishop Orombi did.

Sarah, the issue in 1998 was to affirm the biblical position on sexual behavioor. Now, the issue is the defiance of that position by members of the church. The ABC may not want to deal with that at Lambeth, but that doesn’t mean that the orthodox going there can’t do so. They can make Lambeth the scene of a formal declaration of excommunion. Where else but at such a gathering would you do such a thing? If we are going to break communion it seems best if it is announced face to face.

I lay out a fuller argument for this here .

I attended a service last night in San Diego County where Archbishop Venables preached…Wow…what a voice he will be at Lambeth. God will be with him.

  6. AnglicanFirst says:

    ElaineF. (#5), I agree.

I heard ++Venables speak in Dale City, Virginia several years ago.

He has the Faith, intelligence, strong personal presence, public speaking ability, and courage to take on all of the revisionists at Lambeth, simultaneously.

  7. Cennydd says:

I was honored to attend the seminar, Mass, and reception at St James’ Cathedral in Fresno on Tuesday, April 29th, and talked with Archbishop Venables for quite a while. The depth of his intellect and committment to Christ and His Church truly amaze me! He will indeed be a very powerful voice at DEFCON!

  8. Ratramnus says:

Is he really an archbishop, or does he just play one in interviews?

  9. Br_er Rabbit says:

Hmmn, Cennydd, DEFCON is a cold war military term for a national Defense Condition, DEFCON 1 meaning an attack is imminent.
GAFCON 1, however, means that we have already been under attack for some time.

  10. Br_er Rabbit says:

    Ratramnus, it’s the latter.
    He’s a Presiding Bishop.
