Homophobia accepted in church, Bishop Ingham says

From the Toronto Globe and Mail:

Canada’s only Anglican bishop to authorize the blessing of homosexual unions said yesterday the refusal by his fellow bishops to approve the rite for the national church is the product of institutional inertia rooted in homophobia.

Bishop Michael Ingham of the Vancouver-area diocese of New Westminster said homophobia, hiding behind interpretations of scripture, remains an acceptable prejudice in Canadian Anglicanism.

“There are members of our church who staunchly defend that. In my view, [it] is a total misreading of scripture and a misuse of the Bible to oppress people. But they clearly want to continue to do that.”

Well of course, use adhominem attacks and villify those who do not share your point of view, because there is no justification in scripture and tradition for the Bishop Ingham’s positon.

  2. Tom Roberts says:

+Ingham is obviously exercised about the ACC’s inclusive stance. 😮

Christian slaves in the Sudan are oppressed. Anglican homosexuals in Canada who possess the same right to marry as heterosexuals are not, in fact, oppressed.

For all the listening Anglicans are supposed to have done since Lambeth 1998, this clown still doesn’t get it. It’s not fear that motivates us. It’s faithfulness. Besides when you keep people’s attention focused on secondary matters like motives it means one will less likely be engaged on matters of substance. C.S. Lewis coined a term for it, Bulverism.

  5. Pb says:

Homophobic is a perjorative term which begs the issue. How about heterophobic and bibliophobic?

Since Bishop Ingham is so sure and brilliant, I want to nominate him to be the Christ and the new author of the new scripture. I think he’d be just the guy we need to clarify all our miserable errors. What a shame we didn’t have him in Jesus’ day. We could have avoided all of this argument and given up following after the Apostles. I mean, who were they, anyway!

  7. Cousin Vinnie says:

Ingham can only talk this way if he avoids reading and discussing the relevant Bible passages. It’s not so easy to say, “The Bible doesn’t say that,” when you’ve just read a passage that says exactly what you deny.

I believe I am getting Inghamophobia. Perhaps if I call two or three friends together and we have some bread and a glass of wine, I will get over it. Do youthink so? LM

Prophet? Not a prophet? Certainly not a prophet for democracy and the church government, since they got it wrong in I’s view. And that is the only view that matters in I’s mind as he makes perfectly clear. A legend in his own mind.

History? Doctrine? Tradition? Scripture? None hold a candle to I. Shame he’s not running for a post equivalent to Pope. He certainly seems to think he should be one!

Homophobia is accepted in church??? Well, I know that heresy and apostasy sure are.

  12. midwestnorwegian says:

Since personal experiences and “understandings” are the theme of the church today, my personal “understanding” has shown that there is far much more Christophobia in The Episcopal Church and in the ACOC today than anything else.

I have phobaphobia, apostaphobia, herisaphobia and Epistautocrataphobia!!!

  14. Stan W says:

Once again our objections are not an unwarranted fear or hysteria. Our case is not based on emotional fear toward homosexuals, but a healthy respect for the clear teaching and mandate of God’s Word. We cannot legitimize that which God has forbidden. Our love for him and those precious souls struggling with homosexuality demands it.

homophobia = a made up word/condition designed to silence opposition/shut down debate on the issue of full acceptance/blessiong of the GLBT agenda in society/church.

  16. libraryjim says:

blessiong = a misspelling of the word “blessing” due to the poster inability to type!
