Tim Russert RIP

I was surprised by the news, as he was only 58. As a big Meet the Press fan, I can say he will be sorely missed here.

Last I saw him on tv, not that long ago, he looked like he was in good shape.

His absence will most certainly leave a void on tv.

And he was a good Catholic boy, besides. Of all the talking heads on TV, he was the only one I paid attention to – he didn’t rant, stoop to demagoguery, and he was ruthlessly honest and hard even on those with whom he may have agreed politically, if their views were weak and untenable. There will be a big void on TV. Requiescat in pace.

  3. Ad Orientem says:

He was a giant in the media. But he was also a devout Catholic and a great family man, deeply devoted to his wife and son. Without a doubt one of the most personable figures in the broadcast news service; his loss is going to be incalculable..

    May his memory be eternal!

Godspeed Tim – prayers all around his family & all those that mourn.

I adored his work and will miss him.

Terrible, shocking news! His intelligence and understanding of DC will be sorely missed, especially in this election year! God bless him and his loved ones.

Ditto to what all have said so far, beginning with your comment, Kendall. There was no tree taller than him in the network TV news forest. His dad, “Big Tim,” is still alive; he and other family members have our prayers and sympathy.

With whom will NBC replace him? They have no one even close to his stature that I know of. Matt Lauer? Hardly. Chris Matthews? He has clearly blown any pretense to objectivity. How about Keith Olbermann? That would put the final nail in the coffin of NBC News.

What a terrible, awful loss. There is no one, no one I can think of anywhere that can fill his shoes in any network. He was one of a kind.

David Gregory or Kelly O’Donnell or Gwen Ifill

Heads up to all of us who work too hard and too intensely
either in national politics or in church politics. The former
is in the interests of our country; the latter will always
be futile and essentially meaningless. God rest Tim’s soul,
and God bless his love of the country.

  11. Carol R says:

David Gregory, nope. Not an objective newsman at all. I agree, Tim was a rare older-style journalist. I wonder if Chris on MCJ will post a tribute since he has invoked Tim’s visage for many hilarious “interviews.”

One of the few journalists around for whom I had respect.

It is highly likely that he is a man sorely missed by those who were close to him. God grant them peace.

Huh? No it won’t “always be futile and essentially meaningless”. Politics is merely the work of humans in the ordering of organizations — not inhenerely “futile” or “meaningless” than any of the other work God has us do.

I can’t imagine the rest of this year without him. A great journalist, a patriot, and a truly good man. What heartbreak.
