Anglican Journal: Algoma elects college president as bishop

The diocese of Algoma on Oct. 2 elected Rev. Stephen Andrews, who is General Synod prolocutor, as its new bishop.

Bishop-elect Andrews, who is president and vice-chancellor of Thorneloe University in Sudbury, Ont., was elected on the ninth ballot, according to a brief announcement at the diocesan Web site, www.dioceseofalgoma.com

A respected New Testament scholar, Bishop-elect Andrews was a member of the Primate’s Theological Commission that published the St. Michael Report, a 2005 Canadian theological paper which concluded that the blessing of same-sex unions is a matter of doctrine, but not core doctrine. He was also a member of the team that presented the Canadian church’s view on same-sex blessings to the international Anglican Consultative Council in 2005.

An excellent choice. The brief biographical sketch provided by the Journal fails to mention that the bishop elect also has the distinction of having worked as John Stott’s personal assistant for a couple of years.

I just hope he doesn’t get pulled in by the dogs leading the ACOC. Bishop Ferris did an excellent job of standing up for the truth against the lies. This is the diocese I grew up in from birth. I would be more than a little saddened if it fell to the dogs too. The parish I grew up in was always very authoritarian and high-church. They wouldn’t have stood for any of the nonsense going on in the ACOC now. I guess we just wait and see if the diocese will continue to stand up for the truth. Things are getting very testy in all parts of The Anglican Church in Canada, due to having Hiltz as their primate. He’s a HUGE embarrassment to the ACOC.

The Anglican Journal says he is a NT scholar – his doctorate is actually in OT (but the Anglican Journal has never been all that good on ‘biblical’ stuff)…
