Robert Duncan deposition 'will not be recognised by African Churches'

The deposition of the Bishop of Pittsburgh was a “totalitarian” abuse of power and will not be recognized by the church in Africa, the chairman of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) has declared.

On Nov 1, CAPA chairman Archbishop Ian Ernest, Primate of the Church of the Indian Ocean and Bishop of Mauritius, wrote to Bishop Robert Duncan on behalf of the African provinces and stated the African archbishops “continue to recognize you as a bishop in good standing in the Anglican Communion.”

“Your commitment to orthodox Christian doctrine grounded in the Holy Scriptures is after all the mark of your identity as a true believer in the Anglican tradition,” Archbishop Ernest said. “Your grace, patience and forbearance in the face of opposition to your holy calling is an example to us all.”

This could be read as an indirect statement of ‘broken’ communion with ECUSA or a ‘pending break’ in communion with ECUSA of a very very big portion of the Anglican Communion.

It definitely is a reprimand directed toward those responsible for ECUSA’s actions against Bishop Duncan.

    Magnificent!

  3. Jeffersonian says:

Indeed, Irenaeus, and I’d like to see something, anything, come out of Canterbury on the topic. Is there any way to dress it up as an advance of shari’a to provoke a timely response, perhaps?

A crack has been made and a wedged has been placed in it. All that remains is a good hard blow or constant pressure. The split is coming.

Now we need some strong TEC bishops to invite Bishop Duncan into their dioceses, expressing in terms of ecclesial disobedience their rejection of KJS and her reign of tyranny…I dare you Stanton, Smith, Lillibridge, Lawerance…and all the others…Frey in the Rio Grande…MacPherson…let’s see at least that much!

  6. Katherine says:

This is especially encouraging given concerns people have had about Ernest’s leadership of CAPA. That the body as a whole does not recognize Duncan’s deposition is significant.
