A Nice Portrait of the Role of Military Chaplains

Watch it all. I especially was interested to learn the story of the featured chaplain in terms of his own combat experience.

Kendall, thanks for posting this as well as yesterday’s Prayer for Veterans’ Day. Like any church in the US, we have our list of military personnel we’re praying for, including my son, a Marine deployed to western Iraq. I can’t pray the Prayer without pausing to hold back tears.

Thanks Kendall. It’s good to see the MSM show the chaplain as more than the ridiculous “Fr. Mokayhee” from the MASH tv show. Pastoral care and pastoral crisis intervention is 80% of our job, especially suicide intervention/prevention and post traumatic stress intervention. I hope the MSM does a segment someday on what we do to rescue marriages.

The Military Channel (a Discovery Channel affiliate) did a 1hr special on chaplains, but I haven’t seen it yet. I heard it’s good, so if you find it, check it out and let me know what you think.

My only quibble with this piece is that the MSM likes to call soldiers and airmen “heroes” while ALWAYS portraying us as victims. These are WARRIORS and not wimps! The heroic deeds of some of these men should at least have been mentioned. We owe it to them.

P.S. Pray for my family and our little church for the crazy couple of months ahead as we prepare for my pending deployment. We have a terrific interim priest lined up while I’m away, and I pray that not only will the church welcome him but that he can grow our little church better than me! For my family, we are too busy getting organized right now to think about the time I’m away. Pray that we can get all our affairs in order with nothing forgotten by the time I deploy.
