Demise of local car dealerships leaves a big dent

Watch it all, an excellent reminder of just some of the local ramifications of the economic tsunami through which we are going.

Not to downplay the individual hardships (and trust me, I am going through my own), but this is another inefficient, government-protected business model that should have been put out to pasture long ago.

We have been denying reality and pretending that “money” and “debt” = wealth for a long time, and the correction is consequently that much more painful.

    Remember when:
Almost every county seat had one new car dealership?
Cars were ordered to be produced after driving demonstrators and a deposit?
Dealers secured flooring on credit from banks betting on the future?
Dealers moved their franchise to developing suburbs from county seats?
Dealers added new inventory in all the standard and hot configurations?

The Big Three had dealerships in Belén when I arrived in 2000. Two moved to the nearby county seat off of I-25 after being sold. Two othere tried to make a GM dealership work. I bought my Sonoma from them in ’02. The 2nd owner moved it up to the county seat across I-25 from the others.

The Chrysler/Jeep dealership is owned by the Auge family and they have an 59 year tenure. Last February, they eliminated all but one or two of each Chrysler model and one Jeep model. The inventory of used cars that had been placed on a leased lot was steadily reduced with a focus on small or work vehicles. [There are people in Valencia county that need a F-350 duelie or Ram 2500.] A month ago they moved all the remaining used stock back to the main lot and didn’t renew that lease. The Auge’s know their history and their industry. Where once they had an estimated 125+/- of new and used inventory, since April they have an inventory of 25 +/-. The new guys in the county seat have mega lots full of parked inventory. If Chrysler makes it, they will too. If Chrysler folds and the Auge’s want to sell cars, they will have their chance; however, they are in their 80’s, and might decide to retire. [BG, like a lot of clergy I know.]

We have a car dealership in town which filed for bankruptcy over three months ago. The son and daughter in the family who previously owned it for many years bought it from the owner who declared bankruptcy, and have advertised that it is being reopened “under new ownership.” They said that three months ago…..and it’s still padlocked. The remaining vehicles in their sales lot have been hauled away.

Think about this video when you decide to purchase a foreign car. Foreign dealerships are known for bad treatment of employees and very little community involvement. (At least aroupnd here).
