I love New York (II)

Took our son Nathaniel on the tour and information learning seminar at Columbia University. Gee, it is an impressive place.

Spent time in the bookstore (say you are surprised). They had a book by Columbia graduates remembering their time at school. I remembered that Alexander Hamilton and Teddy Roosevelt went there, but how did I blank out on Thomas Merton? You learn something new every day–KSH.

New York is a great city. If you haven’t been there and are not sure when or if you will be back, surprise your wife and take her to dinner at Sparks Steakhouse. It’s a meal that you (and your bank account) will never forget.

As a Columbia graduate (MSLS ’67) I congratulate your son on being considered by Columbia. If his faith is firm, the Chaplaincy at CU will not damage it. My aunt went to Barnard at the time Thomas Merton was at Columbia. She attended parties in his fraternity house. I lived down the street from it while I was at CU. I think it has been demolished except for the facade, which was incorporated into a new University building.

The Core Curriculum is great! I am Columbia College 2001 and while the university has gotten some notoriety lately for being Obama’s Alma Mater and hosting Ahmadinejad, I still think it is a fine university and I hope your son is able to attend there. While you’re in town you should check out Saint Thomas Church if you haven’t already.
