…[Today] marks the third anniversary of the most devastating attack on Jews in modern times. In its aftermath there were celebrations on the streets of London.
Since then, two Jewish worshippers have been killed in the Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester, two Jewish men attacked in broad daylight in Golders Green and four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity burnt by arsonists.
British Jews are feeling unsafe and besieged. They have encountered a terrible increase in antisemitism, here, in the land of their birth. In some quarters hatred of Israel has become indistinguishable from hatred of Jews. Many are considering leaving Britain.
As British Christians we cannot but feel a responsibility to respond. Without Judaism, there is no Christianity. The bonds are deep. For example, when a Church of England service begins with the words, “O Lord, open thou our lips”, and we respond, “And our mouth shall show forth thy praise”, we are hearing a Jewish prayer that was ancient even at the time of Jesus.
