US Presiding Bishop deposes Church of England Bishop

The Presiding Bishop of the US Episcopal Church has announced that she has deposed a bishop of the Church of England from the ordained ministry.

On Jan 23, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori announced that she had accepted the voluntary renunciation of ministry given to her by the Rt Rev Henry Scriven, Mission Director for South America of the newly merged South American Mission Society (SAMS) ”“ Church Mission Society (CMS) and removed him from the ranks of the ordained ministry.

Under the terms of American Canon law Bishop Scriven is now “released from the obligations of all ministerial offices, and is deprived of the right to exercise the gifts and spiritual authority as a minister of God’s word and sacraments conferred in ordination.”

Sounds like she has steped in it.

  2. Albany+ says:

It shows what we all know, she really doesn’t get “catholic” or “holy orders” — which is the problem in general with those of her stripe –and she needs to go before she discredits and embarrasses “this Church” irreparably.

The HOB needs to act formally to remove her before it’s too late.

In the article it states she described her action against Bishop Scriven as matter ‘housekeeping’ essentially cleaning up the records. Also interesting to note the picture in the article in which seems to be from her installation as PB. The non-traditional design on her miter has been described elsewhere as resembling an ‘oven mitt’ and I can’t disagree. I suppose that is the tie to the ‘housekeeping’ justification. Seems to fit.

    Dilbertnomore,

A small correction. The “non-traditional” mitre belongs to a set of vestments that Christopher Johnson named “Purple Haze” and which were first seen at her installation as Presiding Bishop. I think he refers to Herself by the same name. Not being of the ’70’s Generation, I had to Google the phrase and came up with a rather potent weed.

A photo of the rainbow-hued “oven mitt” mitre can be found at http://www.episcopal-life.org/79901_95739_ENG_HTM.htm

Perhaps we should take up a collection to buy a pitard for the PB. The need for one is at hand.

  6. Sue Martinez says:

#5 Is this what you mean? I always thought it was some sort of sword, but it’s not. However, its similarity to another explosive French verb is even more a propos.

  7. RalphM says:

#6, Sue – Yes! I thought either the technical name (petard) or the possible derivation from the French were appropriate, especially recalling her bovine flatulence admonitions…..

  8. Choir Stall says:

She may have stepped in it, but one thing’s for sure. She has more male chromosomes than the Archbishop of Canterbury. Ohh would that the ABC would “man up” and kick some clerical tuckuses!!!!

  9. Dilbertnomore says:

Sue, many thanks for your correction. I had forgotten her many sartorial facets and became fixated on her ‘domestic’ side as the model wife of that guy living back in Nevada that we never hear anything about. The Purple Haze bit is actually a better fit for this circumstance as she must have checked out of reality on a trip left over from the ’70’s to done this wingnut bit. Again, thanks.

  10. Cennydd says:

The PB clearly needs to be “hoist on her own petard,” and the sooner the better! How about it, ++Rowan?

  11. RalphM says:

I’m sure the PB would cite mitt-igating circumstances should +Rowan send an inquiry….

  12. Irenaeus says:

I want to depose Kim Jong-Il, the Dear Leader of North Korea.

If I ask nicely, would the PB give me remote-deposition lessons?

  13. Irenaeus says:

Would hoisting the PB on her own petard constitute the moral equivalent of judo?

  14. Betty See says:

It is easy to misread this headline, at first I thought that the U.S. Presiding Bishop had deposed the Church of England.

  15. Fr. Dale says:

Look out Your Holiness I think she’s ramping up to you! After all, your communion exclusivity is a “scandal”.

  16. Sue Martinez says:

She’s acting more and more like the Red Queen. “Off with his head!” seems to be the order of the day. After GC this summer, the laity may not even be beyond her reach. (Or did they rescind that part of the resolution?) I’m waiting to see if she’ll declare my baptism and confirmation “invalid,” saying that I’ve renounced them by leaving TEC.
