AP: SC Episcopalians to distance themselves from the national church

“The only model that’s been out there for us has either been leave or acquiesce, and that hasn’t been working,” [Bishop Mark] Lawrence has said. “We need to get the 30,000 members of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina awakened to the challenges before us. … Once we have done that, then the question is how do we engage the larger Episcopal Church?”

Saturday’s vote authorizes the South Carolina bishop and the diocesan Standing Committee to begin withdrawing from church councils and governing bodies that have “assented to actions contrary to Holy Scripture,” according to the resolution text.

The Diocese of South Carolina is comprised of 75 parishes in the southern and eastern part of the state. Other Episcopal churches in the state are in the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

I admire the DoSC’s actions. They are not leaving TEC, just those instruments that have already contravened Scriptural authority. To do less would be to compromise their own Resolution #1. They are crossing their t’s and dotting their i’s. Besides, they offer TEC discussion on the divisive issues. Ausgezeichnet!

As Tom Lehrer would have phrased it, “Two, four, six, eight, time to differentiate”! I doubt the PB has the association or the requisite humor necessary for gracious differentiation. She’ll be more like another Lehrer tune and words, “National Brotherhood Week”.

You know, until the current unpleasantness began, I hardly ever heard of Tom Lehrer anymore. Just a fond (and as I thought, almost private) memory.
It is amazing how suddenly au currant he seems to so many. That probably says all that needs to be said about the absurdity of these times!

The Charlotte Observer obviously has not been updated on TEC’s recently released membership numbers. 2.3 million is a distant memory.

The article was not helpful in informing us as to what happened. I realize that KSH+ is a blogging theologian and not a journalist but we wonder if he could find a trustworthy writer to tell the story with some clarity and inform and illuminate those of us who were not able to attend this noteworthy event.

….and since we’re talking of Tom Lehrer, my favourite is “Plagiarize!” followed of course by “National Brotherhood Week”.

Not the first time SC has demonstrated independence from the Union.

It’s not about the Civil War, John.
