That will be a fun conversation to parody.

  2. advocate says:

Oh to be a fly on that wall…

  3. Br_er Rabbit says:

I am sure it will be respectful, but it would not surprise me if the Pope apologized to +Cantuar.

  4. David+ says:

Maybe ++Rowan will announce that he is taking the Pope up on his offer. Then maybe we can get an orthodox Archbishop of Canterbury who will act to preserve as much of the Communion as possible. That would be refreshing.

  5. CanaAnglican says:

David+, I agree. He needs and perhaps is looking for sanctuary. Rome could provide that.

Why would the Pope apologize? For all we know, he may have even given the ABofC a heads-up before the publication. Am sincere in my asking.

  7. Br_er Rabbit says:

Dee, he could apologize for the unfortunate timing and the undue haste of the announcement. Others might say that it was neither badly timed nor hasty, but I suspect that is RDW’s impression.

  8. Dee in Iowa says:

I don’t think there really would be a good time and as to hasty, the ABofC has had 6 years to try to rectify the harm that has been done. And in that 6 years he met with the Pope as well. I find it hard to believe that the Pope was all peaches and cream during that visit, and I’m sure the AB of C was honest about his reasons for the actions he has taken. Perhaps the Pope knows the mind of the AB of C more than anyone. I don’t think he made this move in a lightly manner……and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out the AB of C knew it was coming……

  9. Br_er Rabbit says:

Dee, you may be right, but all the news sources are saying that the ABoC had little advance warning of the papal announcement. And he certainly looked miserable at the joint press conference with+Vincent.

The ABC acknowledge that he had weeks of warning. Two of them, precisely, and he – as usual – squandered them before notifying his clergy folks with about two days lead. In short, knowledge made no difference to typical inactivity. Rowan Williams has a pattern of behaviour. It is historically evident, discernable, and demonstrable. IF he had been given a decades warning and a decade in which to react, it would not have altered the pattern of behaviour, though he might have given his clergy a seven days notice with that much lead time.
