RNS: Arizona Clergy Press Immigration Reform on Capitol Hill

Religious leaders from Arizona took their cause to Capitol Hill on Thursday (May 13), saying they can no longer ignore the “human cost” of illegal immigration in their state.

“I’m here representing evangelicals,” said Gary Kinnaman, an evangelical pastor from Phoenix after a morning meeting with Sen. John McCain. R-Ariz. “We are increasingly concerned.”

The interfaith group of Jewish, Methodist, evangelical, Catholic and Episcopal leaders said they oppose their state’s new law that allows police to question Arizonans about their legal immigration status. The group said the federal government, not the state, should take the lead on immigration reform.

If they want open borders and a “right of all to come to the United States” then let them say so.

I love it when pastors of any stripe make a pronouncement like, “I’m here representing X.” In virtually all instances, they are in fact representing nothing more than their own opinion. I’d love to know which evangelicals Kinnaman thinks elected him to be their spokesman.

    And then there is this:

[blockquote] An Arizona man who has waged a 10-year campaign to stop a flood of illegal immigrants from crossing his property is being sued by 16 Mexican nationals who accuse him of conspiring to violate their civil rights when he stopped them at gunpoint on his ranch on the U.S.-Mexico border.[/blockquote]

As is oft paraphrased, power abhors a vacuum. The Federal government can not both be in authority and not bear responsibility for its failures.

Changing perspective, Christians would do well to meditate on God’s own command in Exodus 23:9 and pray for holy wisdom in this matter.

  5. Br. Michael says:

Exodus 23:9 9 “You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Legal resident aliens are not oppressed in this country. We are talking about illegal aliens. They should not be oppressed, but they should be deported and they should not have the ability to sue US citizens.

I think I will bet fifty cents or a week’s income, whichever is larger, that this issue – the Arizona Solution – is going to have a powerful effect on all the elections coming up. Americans appear to be broadly in agreement with Arizona, however distasteful they may find the necessity of the approach. The Dems and Obama are going to feel the sting of this scorpion by next November. Larry
