Chuck Hough, Canon to the Ordinary in Fort Worth, Announces his Resignation March 31st

Please keep him and Marilyn in your prayers. My understanding is that he is intending to pursue ministry in the Roman Catholic Church, likely under the provisions of the Ordinariate when that all becomes clear.

While not being surprised, I was saddened to hear this last week. Canon Hough has been such an asset to this diocese over the many years he has served as Canon to the Ordinary! He will be missed!

While Canon Hough will be missed, I find it hard to contain my disappointment in him and his integrity. If he wanted to be a Roman, he could have done so, long before the Diocese underwent its changes. Where is the commitment to the vows he took as a priest? How long has he been on this trajectory while he has served in the 2nd most important and influential post in the Diocese? How many others will he take with him to the Nirvana that he envisions in the Roman church? Bishop Iker, in his usual kind and gracious fashion, has not thrown him out on his ear, but has given Canon Hough all the courtesy and respect he could.

Mhmac13, Canon Hough has wrangled with this for quite a while. I believe he has tried to do this at a time when it would cause the least damage. He stayed to support +Iker and the rest of us through the transition. You also need to remember, he is the 5th priest to leave for Rome in the last couple of years, so have to give him credit for trying to stay!

I served with Chuck at three General Coventions and found him to be a man of patience, grace and integrity in the face of much scorn and ridecule for his stance. It would be good, however, if he spoke to Fr. Addison Hart, Bp. Dan Herzog, Bp. Clarence Pope and others who swam the Tiber and didn’t find the water so warm and inviting after awhile.

Personally I like Canon Hough a lot. He has always been gracious, kind, encouraging and supportive. Maybe that is why I am so disappointed in his decision to leave the Diocese and the Bishop at this time. If there is anything they dont need, it is defecting priests, giving the TEC folks more ammunition for their PR machine.
I appreciated Canon Hough’s dilemma, among other things I think his timing stinks. I hope he has talked to those who thought Rome was some magic answer and came back to the faith that nurtured and valued them and their priesthood. We will all survive, but once more I am reminded that my high expectations of others seldom meets the mark. As Tiny Tim says, God bless us every one!

The anti-Roman tone is rather unattractive.

One should note that the new ordinariates are a unique new departure, unlike anything the Church has attempted before, and consequently present a new opportunity for an Anglo-Catholic who believes (as many of us do) that reunion with the Holy See is our ultimate goal.

Canon Hough, who has evidently served his denomination well, ventured out with Bp Iker to seek a place in which Catholic order was respected. Such a place, far more secure than ACNA can offer, has been provided by a generous offer from Benedict XVI. Canon Hough feels he must, in conscience, take it up.

He deserves at least polite respect.

Clearly support of the Canon’s decision is banned. My last visit to, or comment on, this blog.
