(BBC) Arab League backs Libya no-fly zone

The Arab League has backed the idea of a no-fly zone over Libya, as rebels continue to be pushed back by Colonel Gaddafi’s forces.

A special meeting in Cairo voted to ask the UN Security Council to impose the policy until the current crisis ended.

The UK and France have pushed for the idea, but have failed so far to win firm backing from the EU or Nato.

And what sort of leadership and form of government would the Arab League like to see taking ovetrol of Libya after an ouster of Qadaffi?

If the Arab League is interested in replacing Gaddaffi, then perhaps the Arab League should consult the major Arab power just to the east of Libya. The Egyptians could do more than enforce a no-fly zone. They have the power to invade Libya, defeat the Libyan Army, and install a new Government. If replacement is really the goal, then someone has to invade. A bunch of guys in pick-up trucks is not going to beat an Army. It takes an Army to beat another Army. The only real chance the rebels had was to flip the army. The longer this goes on, the stronger the government position becomes. The stronger the government position, the more likely it is the Army stays loyal. No one wants to be on the losing side of a conflict like this.

If they want a no-fly zone, then let them provide the means to enforce it. We have enough on our plate now.
