Allentown Catholic Diocese anticipates new structure to welcome Anglicans

[Karen] Brynildsen, her husband, Martin, and a half-dozen other area Episcopalians are among thousands worldwide entering or planning to enter the Roman Catholic Church in expectation that the Vatican will establish an Anglican “ordinariate” in the United States. The canonical structure would allow them to retain their reverent, hymn-rich liturgy and other sacred traditions after conversion.

One impetus of the movement, though not the only one, is the progressive-traditionalist divide playing out across Christendom. Dismayed by the drift of mainstream Anglicanism on some social and theological issues ”” including women’s ordination and the sanctioning of homosexuality ”” conservatives have turned to Rome, where teaching and practice are unchanged.

The local group has been meeting at Sacred Heart, in Bath, to undergo religious instruction and look forward to the day when the church will offer the liturgy that has nourished their Christian faith these many years. Pope Benedict XVI set the stage for that possibility in November 2009 in a document called Anglicanorum Coetibus, which the Vatican said was a response to persistent requests from Anglican groups for a process whereby they could be accepted into the Catholic Church while retaining elements of their Anglican heritage.

No, no. If they want to embrace the RCC, then they need to embrace the WHOLE thing — not just the bits they like. If they recognize that the central act of Christian worship leaves much to be desired in the RCC and they need to import their own, isn’t that a red flag? If it’s not, it should be.

Notice the comment about the VOTF (Voice of the Faithful). Here’s their website — anything sound familiar? http://www.votf.org/
Call to Action is another movement in the RCC.

You can embrace the Catholic Church, ‘the WHOLE thing’ and still retain aspects of the Anglican liturgy. There are many rites in the Catholic Church that have retained their liturgies. Oriental, Maronite, etc.

#2 — But what they’re creating here isn’t an Anglican Rite, such as the Byzantine Catholic Church. They’re going to be Roman Catholics and, as far as I know, they will only have the Anglican niceties/liturgy as long as there is a priest (a former Anglican) who will follow that. If not, they will have to go along with the rest of the RCs. It’s not as if the RCC is going to be training their own seminarians for the Anglican Use parishes and allowing them to marry.

    Caedmon,
Oh my. OK, here I had given up cussing for Lent, but when those, um, heavy-set middle-aged women were dancing around and those huge, African puppet-people with exaggerated features showed up, I found myself uttering WTH over and over again. 🙁 I’ve unfortunately witnessed a lot of bad RC masses in my time but that one was just stunning. Btw, the song they were singing is a mainstream RC “hymn.”

And the second vid? Heh. Kumbaya and all! LOVED the young man’s sarcastic comments, lol. Proof that attempts to be “hip” are generally met with ridicule by youth.

Caedmon, thank you for the puppet video. You’ve just made my afternoon.

  7. Teatime2 says:

OK, wait. I just went back and watched the entire thing. (I had to turn it off halfway through the first time. Too painful.) Are those puppet-things supposed to be Jesus? Is that why they’re all standing up there around the priest during the Eucharistic Prayer? :O

Sheesh, no wonder Rome is keen on bringing in reverent liturgical influences. And no wonder they’re keen on keeping the Anglican converts separate! Seeing all of the related vids and links listed just on YouTube, there’s apparently a lot of this going on.

Wow, #3. Interesting how many of the parishioners (almost all) in the first video are retirement and post-retirement age…. Looks like everyone’s ready for a U2charist!
