Church urges council to ”˜bring back Christmas’

The Bishop of Bolton, the Rt Rev David Gillett, who has called for Christians to celebrate Christmas more simply and criticised the ”˜over consumption’ of the festival, commented on the situation.

He said: “I am quite surprised to see the usual Christmas greetings replaced by the slogan ”˜Recycle for Warrington’. “The various faith communities in Warrington all share the common belief that we should care for our environment and celebrate festivals in an appropriate way. “For the majority of Warrington’s population the celebration of Christmas is an important time. I hope that next year the town council will reinstate Christmas.” The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, whose diocese includes Warrington, said: “Peace on Earth is the message of Christmas. Recycling is one way of preserving the earth. But it’s only part of the message.”
