UN officials say alleged chemical weapons attacks which Syria’s opposition says killed hundreds near Damascus were a “serious escalation”.
Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson made the comments after briefing an emergency UN Security Council meeting about Wednesday’s incident.
The Security Council also said that clarity was needed over the attacks.
One would have thought the initial use in April was a serious escalation. I kept waiting for a shot across the bow from that. I wonder if it will ever get to the point where it’s “really, really, serious” and require a letter, or perhaps a full-page ad in the NY and London Times admonishing Syrians for not acting like they care what is being said about them.
